Shane first worked in golf course design in 1997, while finishing up his civil engineering curriculum at Georgia Tech. After college, he began working for Tom Fazio and learned to effectively coordinate the different disciplines of building a golf course while spending many days onsite during construction. In fact, Shane traveled extensively during this time and worked on many Tom Fazio projects in the eastern U.S. Shane was also responsible for producing plans and construction documentation for projects of all scopes including small‐scale renovation jobs to new golf course construction.

Shane temporarily left the golf course design industry, after seven years with Fazio design, to pursue his interest in real estate development. He worked for the development team at Lonesome Valley in Cashiers, NC, a boutique residential development, where he assisted in master planning, construction supervision, HUD submittals, and land sales. His interest in land development and real estate motivated him to pursue a license as a real estate broker in the state of North Carolina, a designation he has held since 2006. Recently, Shane earned status as a LEED Accredited Professional so that he may better apply the principles of environmental design and sustainability to future golf design and land planning projects.

Following his experience in land development, Shane was able to reconnect with Beau for the inception of Beau Welling Design, in 2007, with the idea that their mutual interest in golf and development was a perfect fit. At Beau Welling Design, Shane is involved in all of the day-to-day activities ranging from project design to client communication to business development.
